Every year London Climate Action Week (LCAW) supports action across London’s diverse school community. Our objective is to bring London’s school sector together as a major force for climate action. London has an ambitious climate agenda and schools have a vital role to play in delivering it. If all of London’s 3600 schools pulled together on climate action, it would be transformative. Hence our motto “Think like a system and act as a sector.” We invite all of London’s different types of schools to take part: state schools, independent schools, special schools, faith schools, alternative provision and international schools. Each has its role to play to help deliver a climate safe, just and resilient city for Londoners and beyond. Working with our partners across London, we seek to support engagement on the five pillars introduced by the LCAW Schools Climate Summit in 2021 – the four ‘C’s and the one ‘F’ – Campus,Curriculum, Community, Careers and Finance. London is getting hotter and schools need to prepare. In July 2022 London broke all records by breaching 40°C and the Government declared a national emergency. The Met Office predicts 2024 could be the hottest year on record. This year LCAW 2024 has teamed up with the British Red Cross to #BeatTheHeat and help Londoners prepare for heatwaves and extreme weather to build a more resilient city. Read more
At the opening of LCAW 2023 at London’s Guildhall, we were proud to feature “My Lungs” highlighting air pollution, created and performed by Year 7 students from Riverside School (London Borough of Barking & Dagenham). An initiative of our longstanding LCAW partners, the amazing Studio 2909.

London Climate Action Week’s schools initiative kicked off with the Schools Climate Summit in 2021. An epic day long event, held virtually as London re-emerged from the COVID19 pandemic, the Summit featured leading voices from schools and the climate education community. Still a great resource with insights valid today and speakers & ideas you may wish to connect with. Check out the full programme here and view the playlist here.

Meeting the city’s net zero, circular economy and broader Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 will require a step-change. While individual school efforts are inspiring, only a sectoral approach can create impact at scale. The LCAW Schools Climate Summit calls on London’s 3,500 schools to think like a system & act as a sector. If you’re an educator, activist, student, governor, policymaker, parent or business manager, this Summit is for you. Join us and help frame a new schools’ agenda to tackle the climate emergency at scale.
